In response to an all-time low of UK butterfly numbers, conservationist and Butterfly Conservation member, Jan Miller has taken action to help show how we can encourage butterflies into our gardens.
The last three years have seen butterflies in the UK hit an all-time low with almost half of them now under threat. To help bring an end to this, Butterfly Conservation member Jan Miller felt compelled to take action by helping people understand the importance of these vital species.
She says, “Butterflies and moths are very sensitive to environmental change, which makes them very good indicators of the health of the countryside. They are essential for the pollination of plants, and caterpillars provide food for many birds and other wildlife. However, due to factors such as intensive farming methods and habitat destruction, butterflies are sadly in serious decline. I have been passionate about butterflies and their plight for a good many years and am pleased I have been able to contribute to their wellbeing by producing this book”.
Jan has recently produced “Gardening for butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects” – a stunning guide to encouraging butterflies and other wildlife into your garden complete with habitat guides, insect identification techniques and much more.
Ten per cent of the profits made on sales will go to Butterfly Conservation.
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, where governments, councils and environmental organisations are aiming to raise awareness concerning our dwindling wildlife and their importance.
“Gardening for butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects” is available for purchase at Saith Ffynnon Wildlife Plants, Whitford, Holywell, Flintshire CH8 9EQ or visit Jan's website.
