The Tytherley Woods Project - Part of the South East Woodlands Project

Argent & Sable by Kelly ThomasThe woods around Tytherley are rich in woodland butterflies and moths. The species seen here include Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Duke of Burgundy, Marsh Fritillary, Purple Emperor, Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth, Argent & Sable, Drab Looper and Common Fan-foot.

However, less traditional management of our woods in recent decades has resulted in many species undergoing rapid declines.

By working with local people, the Tytherley Woods Project aims to reverse trends and secure these species long-term survival. The Tytherley Woods Project Officer Caroline Kelly has been supporting woodland owners and managers in their efforts to conserve our rare butterflies, by providing woodland management advice, seeking funds for practical woodland work or carrying out surveys.

There is much still to be done in the area in 2010 so new volunteers are being sought to add strength to the project.

If you would like any further information do please get in touch with the Tytherley Woods Project Officer Caroline Kelly. She would be delighted to hear not only from woodland owners and managers in the area but also from local woodsmen and contractors. Additionally, anyone interested in attending future walks and talks can register to receive regular events updates.
