In 2002-3 Butterfly Conservation helped identify Prime Butterfly Areas throughout Europe where conservation should be targeted as a priority
Priority European sites
This project concentrated on identifying an initial selection of sites for 34 target species, using a network of national compilers.
The report was published as a book. It gives details of 431 areas across Europe, from the Atlantic coast of Ireland to the Urals, and from Finland to Sicily. Together the 431 areas cover 1.8% of the land surface of Europe.
Target butterflies are declining in a quarter of these Prime Butterfly Areas. This indicates that breeding habitats are continuing to deteriorate even though many are protected by national designation.
The book can be ordered by sending an email to info@vlinderstichting.nl.
