Brownfield wildlife can co-exist with industry and regeneration. This conference showed how, with examples from some of the UK's biggest users of brownfield land
Brownfields for Butterflies and Business UK Conference
In a climate of rapid regeneration and housing expansion, brownfield species have never been more under threat.
Butterfly Conservation hosted the first conference on saving brownfield diversity.
Delegates from Government, industry, environmental agencies and NGO’s attended the event.
Antony Glossop, chairman of the UK’s largest land developers St Modwen PLC, gave the keynote address.
After working with Butterfly Conservation to incorporate habitats for brownfield butterflies on St Modwen sites, Glossop actually saved St Modwens money. As a result, he invited conservationists to work with St Modwen across the UK.
Outcomes
There are lots of opportunities for brownfield butterflies to benefit from development. These need to be identified early on in the planning process.
A national database of all brownfield sites with wildlife value or potential needs to be developed. This would mean biodiversity could be flagged up in the early stages. It would enable successful, cost-effective and innovative solutions to conserving brownfield biodiversity.
