The Marsh Fritillary is in serious decline right across Europe
Tonyrefail Rhos Pasture Project
There are some significant populations of Marsh Fritillary in Wales, including one discovered only a few years ago at Tonyrefail in Rhondda Cynon Taff, south Wales. Butterfly Conservation Wales is now involved in restoring pastures there to ensure the butterfly continues to thrive.
Over the first two yearsof the scheme, five landowners signed management agreements with Butterfly Conservation in exchange for help with fencing and scrub clearance. So far over 30 hectares of suitable habitat has been brought back in to sympathetic management, which is almost a third of the land the butterfly can use around the town.
