The Marsh Fritillary butterfly lays its eggs in clusters of over 100

The female Marsh Fritillary lays at least 100 eggs at a time, (sometimes up to 500!) on the undersides of the leaves of Devilsbit Scabious

The larvae feed together on a web they spin on the leaves until they are much larger, when they spread out on their own.

Many butterflies and moths lay their eggs singly on the chosen foodplant.

The Small Blue lays single eggs on the flowers of Kidney Vetch and the caterpillars hatch out and feed on their own.
