Five of the UK's 60 resident butterflies have become extinct over the past 100 years and over half the remainder are threatened. Moths too have suffered major declines

Monitoring ButterfliesWe are involved in numerous practical projects to halt and reverse these declines.

  • Monitoring and maintaining records of butterfly and moth numbers with programmes including Butterflies for the New Millennium, UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, and Moths Count
  • Providing advice about threatened species and their habitats
  • Involvement with conservation measure that cover entire landscapes – i.e. landscape-scale
  • Maintaining our own nature reserves
  • Conducting research to understand what the habitat requirements of various butterflies and moths
  • Developing ways butterflies and moths can help us assess the impact of environmental policies and factors such as climate change
  • Providing advice to both central and local government
  • Working with Butterfly Conservation Europe to conserve butterflies and moths across the continent
