Moths Count is the biggest moth project of its kind in the world
Wildlife spotting in your back garden
Whether you are new to the wonderful world of moths or a knowledgeable enthusiast, Moths Count gives you lots of opportunities to take part. You can submit moth sightings, attend moth events, or get involved in Butterfly Conservation's work to conserve moths: whatever you do, Moths Count can help you wonder at the beauty and variety of our moths.
Butterfly Conservation’s report The State of Britain’s Larger Moths shows that moth numbers have decreased by a third since 1968. In the south and in urban areas, the losses are even more alarming. We need to act now to ensure that these beautiful and essential creatures are conserved.
Moths are fascinating in their own right. They are also integral to this country’s biodiversity, playing an essential role in the fabric of our environment. Their loss threatens numerous species of birds, bats and small mammals that feed on them.
The National Moth Recording Scheme, part of the Moths Count project, has been made possible by an £806,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Butterfly Conservation President Sir David Attenborough said: “The Heritage Lottery Fund is to be congratulated on having the vision to back Moths Count. We are extremely grateful to them and our other funders.”
Moths Count Manager Richard Fox said: “Moths represent the hidden wealth of wildlife on all our doorsteps. Without moths plants would not be pollinated and our garden birds would go hungry.”
