It is easy to help conserve the butterflies and moths of Herefordshire's woodlands

Monitoring Herefordshire

Monitoring butterfliesThere are many ways you can help to monitor Herefordshire's butterflies

Transects

The weekly monitoring of butterflies along a set route from April to September.

There are transects throughout the county which you could help with, or you set up a new one. For more information visit West Midlands Butterfly Conservation or contact:

John Tilt, West Midlands Butterfly Conservation, 9 Meadow Close, Kington, Flyford Flavell, Worcs, WR7 4DE

Tel: 01386 792458 or email.

Casual sightings

Painted LadiesCasual records give Butterfly Conservation a good idea of what butterflies live in a particular area. Records of all species are important and can help us target conservation effort where it is most needed.

You can download a recording form to take out with you from the West Midlands Branch.

Please send records to Nigel Stone, 8 Grove Lane, Keresley End, Coventry, CV7 8PN, or email.

Timed Counts and Habitat assessments

Timed counts and habitat assessments give us information about the abundance of a particular species and the habitat. This enables Butterfly Conservation and woodland managers to make informed management decisions.

We would like you to target surveys on the Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Wood White, Grizzled Skipper, Dingy Skipper, Drab Looper and Argent & Sable.

For copies of forms please contact Dean Fenton.

Completed forms should also be returned to Dean Fenton.

Moth recording

Moth trapping by Anna JordanYou can record moths almost anywhere from woodlands to gardens. We would like you to send us your records to give us information about the moths in an area so that we can work to conserve them.

There are volunteers who regularly go moth trapping and would be happy for more people to accompany them.

Please send records to the Herefordshire County Moth recorders:

  • Phyl King, Woodlea, Little Dew Church, Hereford, HR2 6PS, Tel: 01432 840421 or email
  • Michael Harper, The Cherry Orchard, Gloucester Road, Bullen, Ledbury, HR8 2JE. Tel: 01531 632030
