Scottish Natural Heritage has funded Butterfly Conservation Scotland to help conserve Scotland's butterflies and moths since 2002

80 workshops for volunteers, landowners and countryside staff, attended by over 800 people

A pool of 400+ active volunteers recruited

Two nature reserves in Scotland opened, joint with Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS)

  • 4 Regional identification guides
  • Volunteer’s Handbook compiled and reprinted twice
  • Co-ordinated national surveys for several Priority UKBAP species
  • Volunteer Recorders’ Gatherings each spring
  • Members meetings each autumn
  • Annual newsletter for members, volunteers and others
  • Increased membership by 70%
  • 2400 records submitted during Orange-tip postcard survey in 2007
  • Butterflies and moths included in the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy indicator
  • Our lobbying has helped improve agri-environment and forestry grant schemes
  • Assisted with the first round of SSSI condition monitoring
  • Collaborated in projects with SNH, FCS, RSPB, several local BAP partnerships, BTO, the two National Parks, Buglife, Plantlife and BRISC (Biological Recording in Scotland)
  • Supported UK-wide butterfly and moth monitoring schemes
