Butterfly Conservation Wales is involved in seven landscape scale projects and participates in two other partnership projects.
Landscape Projects:
Under the umbrella of the South Wales Coal Measures partnership we are running two projects for the Marsh Fritillary at Mynydd Mawr in Carmarthenshire and Tonyrefail in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The Marsh Fritillary is also the focus of volunteer led work centred on the Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve.
The High Brown Brackenlands is looking to restore former sites in south Wales. It aims to encourage the High Brown Fritillary to naturally spread from its remaining site in Wales.
Hairstreak Hedgerows covers Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire; stronghold of the Brown Hairstreak. The key requirement is getting less frequent cutting of Blackthorn hedges.
The Oswestry Uplands is a cross-border project to conserve the last stronghold for the Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
At Clocaenog Forest in Denbighshire we are monitoring the impact of vegetation change on Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary. Forestry Commission Wales are then looking at long term management solutions.
Other Projects:
We also have an ongoing monitoring programme with Forestry Commission Wales. This focuses on key species – Drab Looper, Argent and Sable, Small Blue, Grizzled Skipper and Dingy Skipper.
With a consortium of wildlife groups we are monitoring the Tir Gofal agri-environment scheme. This Welsh Assembly Government funded work is looking at Marsh Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Brown Hairstreak.
