The Provisional Atlas of the UK's Larger Moths, published in December 2010, was based on the first 11 million moth records collated by the National Moth Recording Scheme and represented a landmark in moth recording.

The Provisional Atlas shows distribution maps for all 868 naturally-occurring resident and immigrant macro-moth species in the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.

This was the first atlas to cover all the UK’s larger moths and included the first distribution maps ever published for c.300 species (the Geometrids), as well as the first new maps for over 20 years for other species. As such, it was major step forward in our knowledge of moth distributions and a ‘must have’ for moth recorders.

The maps included historical records (pre 2000) and current records (post 2000). They illustrated under-recorded areas, which enabled targeted recording and improved knowledge and conservation.

To mark the occasion of Butterfly Conservation's 50th anniversary in 2018, an Atlas of Britain and Ireland’s Larger Moths is being produced and published. This will be the first ever complete atlas of Britain and Ireland's larger moths and will provide up-to-date distribution maps and species accounts of almost 900 species.

To help raise funds for the production and publication of the Atlas, moth species are available for exclusive sponsorship via an online auction website. If you would like to sponsor a species and have your name or dedication printed in the Atlas within the species account, please view the Moth Auction webpage.
