Join us for a trip to Bernwood Forest: Once part of a Royal Hunting forest of Bernwood. This Forestry England extensive woodland contains areas of broadleaved woodland, many wide rides, ponds and glades; which support a rich flora and fauna. It is one of the best sites for woodland butterflies in the country.
We will explore the tracks and paths searching for some of the, nearly 40, species of butterfly recorded in, what is rightly regarded as, one of the best butterfly woods in the country. Target species: Purple Hairstreak, Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral and, if we are lucky, the magnificent Purple Emperor.
Accessibility & risks: mainly wide, surfaced tracks but we may
wander off onto a narrower muddier path as well. Please check for ticks after the walk and let the leader know if you have picked up any ticks. (Tick advice)
Booking Required. FE have asked us to limit numbers so others can park and enjoy this fabulous site. Please check here the evening before the walk to make sure it is going ahead as planned. This page will be updated regularly.
Meet in the main Oakley Wood car park.
