An Upper Thames Branch Guided Walk at Wytham Wood, led by Peter Philp

Join us for a field session to practise your identification skills for summer butterflies and day-flying moths. This will take place at Wytham Woods: the site is owned and managed by Oxford University and is an extensive woodland with an awesome history of ecological research (over 1,000 scientific papers!). The area supports a mix of ancient woodland, plantations and limestone grassland, with smaller areas of other habitats.

The focus will be on building your confidence in the accurate separation of common species from scarce species, not a long species list. However, we will check to see if we can find the White-letter Hairstreak.

You are welcome to bring a picnic and chat about all things butterfly, moth and conservation over lunchtime.

Accessibility & risks: mostly firm paths and easy walking. Wheelchair users can request gate combination numbers to ease access into the Woods. Please check for ticks after the walk and let the leader know if you have picked up any ticks. (Tick advice) Powered wheelchairs can access the main woodland track.
