Large Red-belted Clearwing (female egglaying) - Pierre Bornand

There are seven 'clearwing' moth species in Scotland, and unsurprisingly all of them have clear wings! Two species, the White-barred Clearwing and Large Red-belted Clearwing, have been identified as priorities for conservation action. This mainly takes the form of surveying for these moths, and volunteers are needed to help with this! Noth moths are found in birchwoods. The White-barred Clearwing has only been found near Aberfoyle and could be more widespread in this general area, while the Large-red Belted Clearwing is more widespread in Scotland (see map below).
Training event: The online training event will be held on zoom on Monday 3rd June from 7pm-8pm. Attendees will find out more about both species and how to take part in surveys using special pheromone lures which will be distributed to volunteers. Click here to register for this event.
