Somerset & Bristol: Carymoor Environmental Centre (Guided Walk)

Carymoor Environmental Centre, Castle Cary

Carymoor Environmental Centre is a capped landfill site with mostly grassland habitats, hedgerows and small wooded areas.  The site is not generally open to the public other than by appointment, so this is a good opportunity to visit.  

Adjacent areas are still in use for landfill, so the entrance gate is locked on Saturdays but will be opened for us between 10.00 and 10.45, after which time there will be no access.

Note that we will probably be required to wear high vis waistcoats/tabards, so please bring one if possible, otherwise the Centre will provide; the butterflies really do not mind!

Species: Given decent weather we should see at least 15 species in good numbers.

Directions: Meet at the Carymoor Centre, Dimmer Lane, Castle Cary BA7 7NR. From the B3135, turn into Dimmer Lane and then keep following signs for the Carymoor Centre  There is ample parking at the centre.

Toilets: The centre will be opened especially for us, so that we can use the toilets.

Bring a packed lunch / picnic to have after we've finished the walk.  Please also bring your own mug - as we may have be able to have cup of tea or coffee at the centre.

Information that applies to all our guided walks

There is no charge for the walks. Children and beginners are especially welcome. No dogs please as some of the sites have livestock on them.

Except where indicated, all walks start promptly at 11.00 am; please take care to arrive in good time.  They are taken at an easy pace and end around 1.00 - 1.30 pm. 

Many sites include steep, rough or wet ground so stout shoes, boots or wellies are recommended. Please inform the walk leader if you have health problems that might affect you on the walk.
