Ubley Warren SWT Reserve, Charterhouse, Mendip Hills

Ubley Warren is a Somerset Wildlife Trust reserve and is characterised by the uneven ground of old spoil heaps and worked out mineral veins or ‘rakes’, known locally as ‘gruffy ground.’

Target species:  Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Common Blue, Small Heath, Small and Large Skippers along with the last of the Grizzled Skippers and the first of the Dark Green Fritillaries and Meadow Browns.

Directions:   Meet at the stile entrance at OS Grid: ST 504 555 having parked in the pull in on the side of the road.  Parking is limited and alternative parking can be found nearby - turn down the lane beside the Charterhouse centre.   (Nearest postcode: BS40 7XR).  Zoom in on the map for actual location.

Public toilets:  Cheddar:  Station Rd (BS27 3AH), Cliff St car park (BS27 3PS), Gorge (BS27 3QJ).    Burrington Combe:  Next to cattle grid at bottom of combe (BS40 7AT).   Blagdon: A368 nearly opposite Seymour Arms (BS40 7TH) (Located in the children's playground).


Information that applies to all our guided walks

There is no charge for the walks. Children and beginners are especially welcome. No dogs please as some of the sites have livestock on them.

Except where indicated, all walks start promptly at 11.00 am; please take care to arrive in good time.  They are taken at an easy pace and end around 1.00 - 1.30 pm. 

Many sites include steep, rough or wet ground so stout shoes, boots or wellies are recommended. Please inform the walk leader if you have health problems that might affect you on the walk.
