1st July 2017 Field Trip to Buxton Heath,

What a difference a week makes in Butterfly watching. 16 People turned out for this trip to Buxton Heath. It was a lovely summer’s day, one of the best we have ever had for a field trip. We saw white admirals, commas, red admirals, purple hairstreaks, meadow browns and a green vein white before we had left the car park. The silver studded blues were seen in good numbers and in many different parts of the heath so they seem to be spreading well.

In addition, we found large skippers, ringlets, small tortoiseshell, small copper, brimstone, small whites, Large whites and speckled woods, 15 species in total.

There were several dragon flies and damsel flies, including a female emperor ovipositing, while the male was flying up and down the pond. A most enjoyable walk with lots to see and all the time a yellow hammer was calling plaintively about his lack of cheese as we walked round this delightful site.
