The 6th May will see the next all-important elections for the Senedd. Although many issues will be on the agenda in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, it is vital that the environment be part of the debate.
This is where you can help! Butterflies and moths don’t have a voice but their future will be affected by the outcome of the election, and the priorities and policies of the politicians and parties that make up the new Senedd.
We are facing the three crises of a global pandemic, climate change and biodiversity loss. It is an age of mass extinction. The recent Butterfly Conservation ‘State of Larger Moths’ report showed that the number of larger moths in Britain has declined by approximately 33% in the last 50 years. However, in Wales, along with most of England, this figure is almost 40%. Some species of butterfly and moth are hanging on by a thread. A stark and extreme example is the High Brown Fritillary which is now confined to a single site in the whole of Wales, the Alun Valley in Glamorgan.
Unsurprisingly, we know that the collapse of species is not just an issue for butterflies and moths. In Wales, the State of Natural Resources Report (SoNaRR) published earlier this year revealed that ‘ecosystem resilience’ is declining in line with global trends. All the promised actions and commitments have been plainly insufficient to prevent biodiversity loss.
The challenges are immense, but with bold and decisive leadership and action we know we can turn things around. Here in Wales, we need to act so we can play our part in the overall global effort to address biodiversity loss and climate change.
As a contribution to the debate, Butterfly Conservation Wales is part of the Wales Environment Link (WEL). This is a network of like-minded environmental NGO’s who work together to inform and influence important policy debates. For the forthcoming election, we have produced a joint Manifesto highlighting the key issues and corresponding ‘asks’.
This is the moment everyone in Wales can help give butterflies and moths that voice. When contacting or speaking to prospective candidates, below are three key issues where there are opportunities to persuade politicians to back measures which will bring about meaningful change:
1. A commitment to reform of agricultural funding so farmers are supported and rewarded for managing land for wildlife and reducing carbon emissions as well as producing food. It is possible to achieve all three together and some farmers have shown the way in demonstrating how this can be done. But we need a ‘public money for public goods’ principle and an end to direct subsidies. This will allow money to be reallocated and spent on a transformational scaling up of the farming methods which can create a more sustainable long-term approach to agriculture. This would be one of the biggest beneficial changes which could help bring back flourishing wildlife populations to the Welsh countryside.
2. A commitment to set legally binding targets for the recovery of nature. This must include targets for the abundance, distribution and reduction of extinction risk of butterflies, moths and other wildlife.
3. A new and innovative idea to drive a Green Recovery is the establishment of a National Nature Service. This could create 7000 environmental jobs to manage and restore habitats, improve and create urban green spaces and much more! The pandemic will result in many lost jobs and redundancies, particularly among young people and those in disadvantaged and under-represented groups. This is a real opportunity to help those most affected by the pandemic as well as improve the outlook for species, habitats and the climate.

Ar y 6ed o Fai cynhelir etholiad i Senedd Cymru. Er y bydd llu o gwestiynau ar yr agenda yn sgil pandemig Cofid, mae’n hanfodol inni sicrhau y bydd yr amgylchedd yn cael ei le yn y drafodaeth.
A dyma lle gallwch chi helpu! Does dim llais gan bilipalod na gwyfynod ond bydd canlyniad yr etholiad yn effeithio ar eu dyfodol, ynghyd â blaenoriaethau a pholisïau’r gwleidyddion a’r pleidiau a gynrychiolir yn y Senedd newydd.
Rydym yn wynebu tri argyfwng, sef: pandemig byd-eang, newid hinsawdd a cholled bioamrywiaeth. Rydym yn byw trwy oes tranc llu o rywogaethau. Dangosodd adroddiad diweddar Gwarchod Glöynnod Byw, ‘State of Moths’, fod niferoedd y gwyfynod mawr ym Mhrydain wedi gostwng o ryw 33% dros y 50 mlynedd diwethaf. Ond yng Nghymru, ynghyd â rhannau sylweddol o Loegr, mae’r ffigwr bron â chyrraedd 40%. Mae rhai rhywogaethau glöynnod byw a gwyfynod yn crogi ar edau. Un esiampl frawychus yw’r Brith Brown sy’n gyfyngedig erbyn hyn i un safle yng Nghymru, sef Cwm Alun ym Morgannwg.
Nid yw’n syndod i neb mai nid problem i löynnod byw a gwyfynod yn unig yw dirywiad rhywogaethau. Yng Nghymru, mae’r Adroddiad ar Gyflwr Adnoddau Naturiol (SoNaRR) a gyhoeddwyd yn gynharach eleni wedi datgelu bod ‘gwydnwch ecosystemau’ yn dirywio yn gytûn â thueddau ledled y byd. Mae’n amlwg bod yr holl ymrwymo i weithredu yn annigonol os ydym am atal colled bioamrywiaeth.
Mae’r heriau a wynebwn ni’n anferth, ond os cawn ni arweinyddiaeth eofn a gweithredu penderfynol rydym yn gwybod bod modd inni newid cyfeiriad pethau. Rhaid inni weithredu yma yng Nghymru gan chwarae ein rhan yn yr ymdrechion ledled y byd i fynd i’r afael â cholled bioamrywiaeth a newid hinsawdd.
Mae Gwarchod Glöynnod Byw Cymru’n cyfrannu i’r drafodaeth, fel rhan o Gyswllt Amgylchedd Cymru (WEL). Rhwydwaith yw hwn o NGO’s amgylcheddol o’r un meddylfryd sy’n gweithio ar y cyd i ddylanwadu ar drafodaethau ynghylch polisïau o bwys. Ar gyfer yr etholiadau nesaf hyn rydym wedi llunio Maniffesto cyffredin yn pwysleisio’r materion sydd o bwys a’r hawliadau sy’n cyfateb iddynt.
Dyma foment lle gall pawb yng Nghymru helpu i roi llais i’n pilipalod a’n gwyfynod ni. Wrth inni siarad neu gysylltu â darpar ymgeiswyr, dyma dri phwynt isod lle mae gennym gyfle i berswadio gwleidyddion i gefnogi mesurau a fydd yn helpu i wireddu newidiadau ystyrlon:
1. Ymrwymiad i ddiwygio’r drefn gyllido amaethyddol fel y bydd ffermwyr yn cael eu cefnogi a’u gwobrwyo am reoli’r tir er lles bywyd gwyllt a gostwng allyriadau carbon yn ogystal â chynhyrchu bwyd. Mae’n bosibl cyflawni’r tri nod hyn ar yr un pryd, ac mae rhai ffermwyr wedi dangos y ffordd wrth arddangos sut yn union y gellir gwneud hyn. Ond mae angen inni sefydlu egwyddor o blaid ‘arian cyhoeddus er lles y cyhoedd’ gan roi terfyn ar gymorthdaliadau uniongyrchol. Bydd hyn yn ei gwneud hi’n bosibl i ail-ddyrannu cyllid a’i wario ar broses gytbwys weddnewidiol o ledaenu dulliau ffermio a all greu dynesiad mwy cynaliadwy at amaeth dros y tymor hir. Byddai hyn yn arwain at un o’r newidiadau mwyaf buddiol a allai gyfrannu at adfer poblogaethau gwyllt ffyniannus yng nghefn gwlad Cymru.
2. Ymrwymiad i osod targedau cyfreithiol rwymol yng nghyswllt adfer byd natur. Rhaid i hyn gwmpasu targedau ar gyfer helaethrwydd a dosbarthiad glöynnod byw a gwyfynod a rhywogaethau gwyllt eraill, ynghyd â lleihau’r perygl y byddant yn diflannu.
3. Un syniad arloesol newydd a fyddai’n rhoi hwb i Adferiad Gwyrdd fyddai sefydlu Gwasanaeth Natur Cenedlaethol. Gallai hyn greu 7000 o swyddi amgylcheddol a fyddai’n gweithio at reoli ac adfer cynefinoedd, gwella a chreu mannau gwyrdd dinesig a llawer mwy! Bydd y pandemig yn dileu llu o swyddi gan beri diweithdra torfol, a hynny’n enwedig ymhlith pobl ifanc a rhai mewn grwpiau sydd dan anfantais neu’n is-gynrychioledig. Dyma wir gyfle i helpu’r rhai y mae’r pandemig wedi eu niweidio fwyaf, yn ogystal â gwella’r rhagolygon i wahanol rywogaethau a chynefinoedd a’r hinsawdd.
Gofynnwch i’r ymgeiswyr felly sut maen nhw’n bwriadu gweithredu i wneud gwahaniaeth, yn enwedig ynghylch y cwestiynau yr ydym wedi sôn amdanynt yma. Os carech chi chwarae eich rhan, ewch at y wefan 'Dros Bwy Galla i Bleidleisio' sy’n ffordd ddefnyddiol o ddarganfod pwy yw’r ymgeiswyr yn eich ardal chi.
A phan ddaw diwrnod yr etholiad, cofiwch bleidleisio o blaid natur a’r hinsawdd! Diolch yn fawr.
